Valeria Răcilă

Valeria Racila, born Valeria Roşca, today Valeria van Groningen ( born June 2, 1957 in Stulpicani, Suceava County ) is a former Romanian rower. She won two Olympic medals.

Under her birth name Valeria Roşca they erruderte their first international medal at the World Championships 1979 in Bled. Together with Olga Homeghi she won bronze in the double sculls behind Cornelia lens and Heidi Westphal from the GDR and Svetla Ozetowa and Sdrawka Yordanova from Bulgaria. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Soviet rowers Jelena Chlopzewa and Larissa Popova won before lens and Westphal, Homeghi and Roşca received bronze in front of the Bulgarian title holders.

1981 married Valeria Roşca and started then as Valeria Racila.

In the 1982 World Cup on the Rotsee in Lucerne Valeria Racila won the silver medal behind Irina Fetissowa from the Soviet Union in one. In 1984, Romania was the only Eastern Bloc country in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in part. In the women's rowing Romania won five out of six gold medals, only in the aft won the boat from the United States before the Romanians. In One Valeria Racila had left three seconds ahead of second-placed U.S. citizen Charlotte Geer. 1985 Valeria Racila won their last international medal when she won at the World Championships in Hazewinkel Dutch silver behind Cornelia lens. Since 1986 she has been married to the Dutch rower Steven van Groningen. She is now chairman of the Bucharest Running Club and involved in the orientation of the Bucharest City Marathon 2010.
