Värmdö Municipality

Värmdö is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish Stockholm County and the historic provinces of Uppland and Södermanland. The main town of the municipality is Gustavsberg.

Geography

The community is made up of approximately 24,000 islands of the Stockholm archipelago, the islands Svartsö, Möja, Runmarö, Sandö and Nämdö occupy the largest area.

The harbor in the village of Sandhamn lying on the island Sandö is the last port on the way to the open sea. He is the easternmost port of the archipelago belt.

History

The community name was mentioned in 1314 in a letter and was still being written " Warmdo ". The name is very likely related to a waterway that runs through the area. This compound was also in winter relatively " warm " (Swedish varm ) water and was therefore long navigable. The municipality was created in 1974 when the former municipalities Värmdö, Djurö and Gustavsberg were merged.

Economy

Initially operated the inhabitants of the fishing region and hunting seals and seabirds.
