Berlin Six Day Race

The Velodrome is a velodrome and one of the largest concert halls in Berlin. The complex is located at the Landsberger Allee right next to the same S-Bahn station in the district of Prenzlauer Berg district of Pankow. The Velodrome is operated in conjunction with the Max -Schmeling-Halle of the Velomax the group Gegenbauer.

History

The Velodrome has been designed and built as part of Berlin's bid for the 2000 Olympic Games by Dominique Perrault. 1992, the draft was presented, Construction began in June 1993 - three months before the IOC decision, which came out in favor of Sydney. In 1996 the building was completed. As the first event, the 86th Berlin Six days race was held from 23 January 1997. The official handover took place on 5 September 1997.

Previously was on the site of the Werner Seelenbinder hall. With a capacity of around 10,000 people was in 1950, the multi-purpose hall venue for various sports competitions, venue of the first SED party congresses, but also the backdrop for music concerts. The hall was closed in 1992 and demolished in favor of the proposed redevelopment.

In the meantime, called the Hall for three years, Berlin Arena. After a dispute with the owner of the Arena Berlin in Berlin -Alt- Treptow was decided in December 2003, they zurückzubenennen to the original name Velodrome.

Architecture

The velodrome and swimming and diving center in Europe Sports Park are next to each other and are almost completely submerged in a man made landscape stand so that national sides and facades entirely lacking. But the spectacular, lined with stainless steel mesh roof panel constructions stand out as flat discs out a meter from the different varieties of apple trees planted, park-like plateau. About this site stairways lead down to the entrances.

The actual size of the hall and in particular of the roof structure are in contrast to this modest exterior: The Velodrome is circular and has a diameter of 142 meters. The span is 115 meters, making it the largest self-supporting steel roof structure in Europe. The umbrella body itself is 13 meters high, 16 reinforced concrete circular columns carry this 3500 tons of steel. The hall can accommodate up to 12,000 people place.

Velodrome

The 250 -meter cycle track inside is one of the fastest in the world. The record over 200 meters with a flying start on this train stops Robert Förstemann with 10.026 seconds since July 9, 2011. He improved so that the twelve -year-old track record of 10.069 seconds Jens Fiedler, the latter had erected during the UCI Track World Championships 1999. At the Berlin Six Day Race 2012 Förstemann also improved the track record over 250 meters with a flying start at 12.702 seconds and thus beat the record in 12.881 seconds of Maximilian Levy from the year 2008. A year later Förstemann improved the record again at 12.620 seconds, and 2014 turn to 12.441 seconds.

Events

In the velodrome track cycling events such as the annual Berlin Six Day Race and 1999 the train Cycling World Championships, concerts and other large events. This included performances by Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, Robbie Williams, the Böhse Onkelz, Anastacia, Daft Punk, Rammstein, Tokio Hotel, Gwen Stefani, Take That, The Cure, Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Deichkind, the U.S. rapper 50 cents and Helene Fischer on.
