Verberie

Verberie is a commune with 4030 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Oise in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district of Senlis and the canton of Pont -Sainte- Maxence. The place is 13 km from Compiègne, 15 km from Crépy -en- Valois and 17 km from Senlis. It lies on the banks of the River Oise, near the confluence of his left tributary Automne.

History

The place dates back at least to the 8th century and carried the name Verimbrea ( 741 ) Vermeria ( 919), and later Wurembria Verberiacum.

Verberie had its heyday in the Carolingian period. Charles Martel withdrew after the battle of Tours and Poitiers ( 732) back here, and retired to Verberie also those disease, from which he died two years later. He received here by Pope Gregory III. ( 731-741 ) the chains of St. Peter and the key to its grave. On May 23, 753 King Pepin confirmed in Verberie, at the request of Boniface, the Church of Sts. The further history of the place is spectacular. After a plundered by the Normans Verberie 885 was rebuilt, as well as after the fire, which the Englishman laid in 1359. The parish church of Saint- Pierre ( at least the 12th century ) is probably due to the space occupied by the Chapel of the Carolingian palace occupied; its tower collapsed in 1333 together. 1431, King Charles VII the city walls torn down.
