Virtus Bologna Pallacanestro (short Virtus Bologna) is one of the most famous Italian basketball clubs from Bologna. He plays in Lega Basket Serie A and plays its home games in the Palamalaguti ( since 2011 Unipol Arena called ) that is not in Bologna itself, but in the neighboring Casalecchio. There is an intense rivalry with Fortitudo Bologna, which reached around the turn of the millennium its climax when the two clubs were among the best in Europe.
History
Virtus was founded in 1879 as a gymnastics club. The basketball department was founded in 1920. Virtus Bologna has won 14 times, the Italian Cup and the Italian Cup eight times. His best season was 2000/2001 when Virtus next to the Italian championship and the cup still won the Euro League. After financial problems Virtus was relegated in 2003, but returned two years later returned to the Lega A with the help of the license of the second division club Progresso Castel Maggiore.
