Viry (Haute-Savoie)

Viry is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Viry is at 505 m above sea level. Level, about 13 kilometers southwest of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on the plateau at the southern edge of the lake basin, at the northern foot of Mount Sion, in the west of the Genevois Talniederung the Laire, near the border with Switzerland.

History

Viry made ​​since the Carolingian period a rule. The influential family of the Barons of Viry is traced back to the 12th century. In the Middle Ages it was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Geneva and arrived in 1401 at Savoy. In the 16th century the barons received the title of Count of Viry.
