Volkswagen Scirocco

The VW Scirocco is a three-door, 2 2 seater sports coupé from Volkswagen, the spring of 1974 to late summer of 1992 in two generations (both on deck of VW Golf I) was built. The third generation is on the market since 2008.

In the fall of 1988, the VW Corrado was introduced, the Scirocco second generation in 1986 was supposed to replace. In fact, the Corrado but was positioned as a technology and high-quality sports coupe on the market with the type designation 53i VW and produced until the end of production of the Scirocco II in September 1992, in parallel to this, but even beyond.

After a long break, the third generation of the Scirocco was introduced in summer 2008. It is based technically as well as the VW Golf V and Golf VI on the VW motor cross platform PQ35.

The VW internal designations are type 53 for the Scirocco I, Type 53B for the Scirocco II and Type 13 for the Scirocco III.

Genesis

While he was entrusted with the development of the VW Golf, the designer Giorgio Giugiaro came the idea to develop on the basis of a sports coupe. He joined the company Karmann in contact and also presented to the Board of Volkswagen first draft of the coupe as a follow-up model of the VW Karmann- Ghia Type 14 For economic reasons, the Board refused a financial contribution, so Karmann the total investment for the construction of the vehicle -actuated alone. Giugiaro designed the body; Similarities to the at the same time also designed by Giugiaro Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint are no coincidence. All models of the VW Scirocco I and II set forth Karmann in Osnabrück.

Name

In agreement with the Volkswagen Board of Management, the vehicle was given the model name " Scirocco ", under which it was later presented as the VW Scirocco. The name actually refers to a Scirocco hot desert wind that blows from the Sahara to the Mediterranean.

Model development and maintenance

End of the 1960s, a successor to the Karmann- Ghia produced since 1955 coupe was envisaged at the Volkswagen factory. In the fall of 1971 decided the VW product planning, based on the development contract EA 337 - the first Gulf - an attractively priced coupe on the market to position. The abbreviation EA 398 Karmann in Osnabrück received the order to develop the later Scirocco. The body shape was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro.

This came in the spring of 1974 to the market. Three engines, four trim levels and ten exterior colors were available: engines with 1100 cc (37 kW/50 hp) and 1500 cc (51 or 63 kW/70 or 85 hp) engine capacity and trim levels N (basic model ), L, S, and TS, from the August 1976 GT was called, but was equally equipped.

The transversely mounted inline four- cylinder engine had a single overhead camshaft and tappets either ( EA827 ) or drag lever ( to 1300 cc ). The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt. The transmission with four gears sitting in a common housing with the differential. The front wheels ( with rack and pinion steering) were performed on MacPherson struts with lower wishbones, the rear a torsion beam axle was installed. Front disc and rear drum brakes were used.

Until August 1975 all Scirocco were equipped with two front wipers; thereafter, the cars had only the big arm wiper.

In June 1976, the offer was extended to include a larger 1600 cc engine with a mechanical K -Jetronic gasoline-injection from Bosch. Because of the higher output of 81 kW ( 110 hp ) had water coolers, suspension and shock absorbers are modified and there were additional stabilizers, an oil cooler, ventilated front disc brakes, wider wheels and tires with a higher speed rating required. This K- Jetronic fuel injection engine was used ( without a separate oil cooler ) first 1975 Audi 80 GTE.

Also In 1976, the Scirocco GTI, while the VW Golf GTI could be delivered with the same engine until the spring of 1977 in short supply.

As of mid-1977, both the suspension and the appearance were revised for model year 1978. The now existing black plastic bumpers were pulled around the corners, the enlarged front turn signals were better seen from the side, the B- pillars were black in color and the grille received a decorative frame. The suspensions of the spring legs were strengthened and improved steering and engine storage. The engine range now comprised the 37 kW, the 51 -kW and 81- kW motor. The following is a regular facelift was operated both in the interior as well as the technical level ( engines with 1.3 / 1.6 liters, five-speed manual or 4 E Electronic ignition systems ).

In the fall of 1980, followed by the special models CL and SL.

From February 1974 to March 1981 were running at Karmann in Osnabrück total of 504 153 Scirocco of the first off the assembly line. Production ended with the current chassis number 27500 of the model year 1981. Then a single vehicle for the museum has been made in April 1981, which has already received the new black nameplate and bears the serial number 27501. Internally, this vehicle was performed with number 50000 and thus finally completed the production.

Paragraph development

  • According to a press presentation in Wolfsburg, the VW Scirocco was issued in March 1974 at the Geneva Motor Show. As of mid- April 1974, four different motifs appeared under the slogan " Scirocco. A sports coupe at its best " in the press. He was the VW Golf ahead by two months since it was introduced to the public until June 1974. In the first year of sales 24 555 Scirocco's were sold, followed by 58 942 in the year 1975-6000 more than planned. 1977 and 1978 found a year over 87,000 cars a buyer; a figure that was reached did not subsequently.
  • In the UK, where the Scirocco was to find rare in the 1970s due to high selling prices, he received the designation Scirocco MkI ( Mark One ). The special model "Storm" was comparable to the GTI model " limited edition" with leather interior and is there today a sought-after collector's item.

Models

  • Scirocco (N) - Basic model with 1.1 / 1.3 -liter engine
  • Scirocco L / GL ( better equipment)
  • Scirocco S / LS (both with 70/75-PS-Motor )

The letter " L", " T", " GL" and " GT" refers to the equipment, "S" and "i" on the engine power, the "i" the 81-kW-/110-PS-Motor identifies with K- Jetronic fuel injection.

The L- equipment included, among other things: silver-colored instrument insert ( instead of black ), adjustable instrument lighting, trip odometer, cigar lighter, make-up mirror in passenger sun visor, lighting of Ash and heating control, Foam-sealed steering wheel, windshield wiper intermittent wipers, trays on the center console and the passenger side, carpet, luggage compartment light, lockable fuel cap

The GL/GLi- and GT / GTi models were externally to recognize the decorative trims on the belt, the front spoiler and the halogen H1 double headlights (Basic and L- model had broadband headlights - standard without H4 halogen light). Furthermore: Doppeltonhorn, sport steering wheel, tachometer, center console with clock and oil temperature gauge, GL / GLi were standard with tinted windows, carpet inserts in the door panels and height-adjustable front seats with special seat covers ( " Genuacord " ) equipped. GT / GTi had " plaid " references.

Special models

In a small edition of 52 pieces Artz offered the Scirocco I as a station wagon ( Sciwago ) to. Otherwise, there are many modifications of the T - roof and Gullwing to pickup on the basis of two Scirocco generations.

Even before the start of production of the first VW Golf Cabriolet in 1979 there were some cabriolet versions of the Scirocco I. These were produced in small series, such as the Tempest of Wolfe Garage ( Westerham, UK) or the Artz Speedster from Autohaus North City in Hanover. A market success did these exotics in view of the Golf Cabrio ( because of his roll bar " strawberry basket " called ) but denied.

In the course of the early tuning boom in the late 1980s, the idea of a Scirocco Cabriolet was taken up again. In the editorial of issue 04 /1989 of the Scirocco newspaper is drawn to the convertible conversions of the company Zander Exclusiv Tuning in Darmstadt as well as the company Luley. In issue 02 /1994 of the convertible conversion Koch was presented tuning from Phillipsburg. But most Scirocco I- convertibles may have originated from Borken on their own based on one of the conversion kits of the Company convertible design Ostermann -Germer from Overath Bieber or convertible. Accordingly, there are no reliable data on the number of Scirocco ever built convertibles, nor how many have survived to this day.

1978 Volkswagen had planned a special series of coupes with turbochargers for export overseas. Its engine bore the marking EL and developed 90 kW.

The first prototypes of the Scirocco special model were built in 1979 by Karmann (Osnabrück ), but there were serious technical problems in the first test runs and the car never went into series production, which was originally set at a figure of 2000. A model of the test series was not scrapped and is now privately owned.

Motors

The Scirocco was only equipped with four-cylinder in-line engines.

Scirocco II (type 53B)

VW Scirocco II

In the mid- 1970s began with the designs for the Scirocco second generation. The new Scirocco II ( VW internal designation Type 53B) based on the Golf I. Two basic requirements had to be met: flow better body and more space for passengers and luggage.

Also Giugiaro took another draft, but in the summer of 1977, the decision was made for the design of their own design department. The shape with continuous horizontal belt line offered a lowered drag coefficient despite roomier body. The Scirocco II received the chassis and the proven and constantly further developed drive technology of its predecessor; Driving performance, handling and consumption remained at broadly the same level.

The production vehicle was the beginning of March 1981 at the Geneva Motor Show and as of 16 March 1981 were at the Riviera vehicles the press test drives. The VAG dealer received the car from mid-May 1981, June 1981 promoted five ad campaigns for the new model with the slogan. " The new Scirocco. Exciting reasonable. "

However, sales fell short of expectations: 1981 51.938 carriage 25 percent have been sold worldwide, below the setpoint. About 20 percent of customers were female, which was an above-average value at that time.

In 1982, there were 48,000 cars and production was reduced due to daily by 20 to 260 vehicles. Market research in the spring of 1982 showed that 60 percent of respondents, including through the lack of a cheap basic model, the car felt they were too expensive - a Scirocco GTI the new model cost over 17 percent ( 3300 DM) more than its predecessor.

Many potential VW buyers preferred therefore presented in the autumn of 1980 and slightly more expensive Audi coupe that could come up with a better brand image. Almost half assessed the shape of the new Scirocco as "something to much worse " and felt because of the rounded rear end " an unnecessary trend to Porsche ". The conclusion was predicted that the car " will not achieve the success ability of its predecessor ," ... because " lacked the decisive styling appeal of a coupe ."

Then came the fall of 1982 the special model Scirocco GTS in the sale, with the " specifically the largely lost buyers should be addressed under the age of 30 ". The GTS was initially ( with the 85- hp engine ) from 19,450 DM available (corresponds to adjusted for inflation in today's money 18.600 euros. ) An Scirocco GTS with 112 hp power cost 21,990 DM (1982), and was significantly cheaper than the standard models GTi ( 23,835 DM) and GLi ( 23,550 DM) with the same engine.

Even in the years 1984 and 1985, 40 756 or 34 058 sales with cars was unsatisfactory. The introduction of the Scirocco 16V with 102 kW ( 139 hp) in July 1985 brought a brief revival in demand. The 16V model was available from 1986, with regulated catalytic converter and then 95 kW (129 hp).

Nevertheless, the sales figures remained low: were sold during 1986 world still 33,000, the number dropped to 26,000 in 1987. Between 1990 and the end of production in 1992 found only 18,283 Scirocco a buyer.

After 291 497 copies built, was launched on September 7, 1992 in Osnabrück, the last Scirocco II from the tape.

Model development and maintenance

The Product Strategy Committee (PSC ) of the VW plant discussed in February 1976 on the sequel, which should be introduced in spring 1981. In addition to a redesign of the body, a new dashboard, more headroom front and rear, reducing the buoyancy value and cw- value and an increase of the trunk were specified in the requirement profile. Because of wind tunnel studies of the Scirocco II soft flowing lines received instead of the edges and sharp contours of the Scirocco I, a more pronounced wedge shape with very flat front and held up an attached rear end and in addition a spoiler ( for increased downforce and clean rear windows ).

In September 1977, members of the PSC were presented marked the first car styling models of internal and EA 491 ( development contract ). In addition to a design by Giugiaro, who took over the original, distinctive lines of its predecessor, including a study of the in-house design department came up for discussion. The PSC decided on the VW design that better represented the demand of the marketing department for a " moderate hardness rather something in the lines of " The tail was significantly higher and more pulled the rear window down. He reached a lower by almost ten percent drag coefficient of 0.38 ( Scirocco I: 0.42 ), for 1981 an average performance in the automotive industry; a year later presented the Audi 100 had a drag coefficient of 0.30. The Scirocco GTI with 81 kW motor now reached a top speed of 191 km / h ( previous model: 185 km / h ). The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h deteriorated because of the 95 kg higher weight of 8.8 sec to 9.1 sec

After the standard was little demand for the Scirocco I, the better equipped L version was planned at a price of DM 13,660 at entry level. (1981 was the price of the cheapest model with the 44-kW-/60-PS-Motor 16 755 DM). In November 1978, has been set to increase the planned sales figures of 472,000 to 515,000 cars during the building work in the specifications I.

The chassis and hence the wheelbase has been taken over by the Scirocco I. The Scirocco II was but still bigger inside: by curvature of the exterior body surfaces and indentation of the inner linings more space for the elbows, more headroom, especially the back, and thanks to 16.5 cm more car length even more luggage space. The Scirocco II was one of the first cars, which was dispensed with a conventional rain gutter. The first models (1981 /82) had, among others, yet the arm wiper of the previous model. With the known engines (1.3 ltr./44 kW [ 60 hp ], 1.5 l/51 kW [ 70 hp ], 1.6 l/63 kW [ 85 hp ] and the 1.6 -liter injection engine with 81 kW [ 110 hp ] ) he came in the spring of 1981 to the market.

After developing a 16-valve engine in the independent VW and Karmann tuning company Oettinger performance, which appeared in the fall of 1981, had to follow suit VW. As of August 1982, the displacement of the injector was increased to 1800 cc and the engine program profoundly technically revised ( Langhubmotoren ). The maintenance intervals have been extended (15,000 km or once a year ) and the equipment and engine line- streamlined (1.3 l fell off, 1.6 l/51 kW, 1.6 l/63 kW and 1.8 -liter injection engine with 82 kW [ 112 hp ] ).

At the International Motor Show in Frankfurt / M. VW showed in 1983 a 16-valve prototype with 102 kW ( 139 hp), which had been adapted from the Oettinger model and was from July 1985 in the VW range. Beginning of 1986 was also a version with catalyst and 95 kW ( 129 hp ) available. The chassis was redesigned and reinforced drive shafts, wishbones, stabilizers and rear disc brakes adjusted to the new level of performance. In order to reduce the buoyancy of the rear spoiler was designed to be larger. The Scirocco 16V with 102 kW initially cost 27,190 DM He quickened in 8.1 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h and a top speed of 208 km / h In Switzerland, only the catalyst version came with 95 kW ( 129 hp ) on the market.

From 1983 to 1987 published various special models like the GTS (1983 ), the GTX ( 1985-1986), the White Cat (1985 ), the Tropic (Spring 1986), or Scala (Autumn 1986), some with wrap-around spoiler sets and much additional equipment.

In the summer of 1988, the Scirocco has been revised. In the spring of 1989, less than six months after the appearance of the Corrado, the number of designs and options reduced ( only two engines: 1.6 l/53 kW [ 72 hp ], carburetor with U- Kat and 1.8 l / 70 kW [ 95 hp ], injection with catalyst ), but at the same time, the special model " Scala " reissued. In 1990, again the 16V into the program - because of the gap between the Scirocco and the Corrado with 70 kW with 118 kW (160 hp), with a positive impact on sales; The 53 kW version accounted for. By the time production ended in September 1992 still remained the Scirocco GT II ( except in Switzerland ) and the Scirocco Scala ( up to 8/ 1991) in the offer.

Some parts of the VW Scirocco II were taken over by British car manufacturers for their series production: The rear lights of the Scirocco were used in the Aston Martin Virage, the headlights, however, the Bristol Britannia.

Specifications

Scirocco III (Type 13)

VW Scirocco III

The VW Scirocco III is a 2 2- seater sports coupe with front-wheel drive, which was first introduced in the spring of 2008 at the Geneva Motor Show and the public since August 2008 is available. The VW internal designation "Type 13". He is at Volkswagen subsidiary Volkswagen Auto Europe - Automóveis Lda. ( GmbH) in Quinta do Anjo ( county Palmela ) produced in Portugal, where the VW Eos, VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra are built.

The Scirocco III was chosen by the magazine Top Gear Magazine "Car of the Year 2008" ( Car of the Year 2008).

Body and design

The third generation of the Scirocco was first presented first in its present form as a design study and concept car called VW Iroc on 24 August 2006 in Berlin.

The name " Iroc " should make the connection to the name of " Scirocco ". Most exterior design elements and features of the body were taken in the production version, and come from the pen of the German former VW designer Murat Günak. This was, among others, also in charge of the design of the VW Golf V, VW Eos and VW Tiguan.

The design of the vehicle body front of the Scirocco falls on, among others, by the large air intakes on the front bumper that striking honeycomb structure at the air inlet and the silhouette of the bonnet - along with the black radiator louvres ( the " R " model, these are painted black ), it gives the sports coupe a so-called "evil eye". This impression is reinforced by seamlessly transitioning into the fins of the grille housing the headlights. The Volkswagen emblem is embedded flat in the hood. The lateral line rises wedge- shaped, while the roofline falls backwards.

The body of the Scirocco is galvanized to protect against corrosion and thus largely protected against rust. However, the tailgate may well show rust.

Technology

Technically, the third generation Scirocco largely on the Golf VI and assumes introduced by the VW Golf V VW PQ35 platform in construction with a transverse engine. The interior elements of the new Scirocco was taken for reasons of cost almost unchanged from the VW Eos and upgraded with additional aluminum-look elements.

Equipment

Standard equipment includes 17 "alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and gear lever, height- adjustable sports seats, electric windows, air conditioning, brake assist, six airbags, speed-sensitive power steering and ESP. ESP can indeed disable seemingly on a button, but still remains in the background in another sporting mode enabled.

Special features include the rear sports seats with individual seat character and integral head restraints which are also standard fold down and concealed B-pillar, which is to let the vehicle stretched and sportier look.

The optional Parking Assist warns when parking with acoustic signals obstacles: the closer the vehicle comes an obstacle, the higher the sound frequency. In addition to acoustic signals, the picture of the rear view camera " Rear Assist " is reproduced realistically on the radio display. The clear view behind the vehicle thus enables safe parking. Thanks to the high-resolution and detailed display of even small obstacles such as curbs can be clearly seen (both charge only equipment).

Cockpit

Security

The VW Scirocco reached at the Euro NCAP crash test in 2009 five stars. The passengers of the Scirocco can rely on in case of emergency was a standard and comprehensive airbag system. It includes airbags for driver and front passenger with front passenger airbag deactivation, a head airbag system for passengers of both rows of seats and front side airbags. The triggering of the airbag takes place by means of so-called crash sensors: if a collision detected, the airbag control unit ignites the inflator fills the air bag within 30-40 milliseconds.

The likewise standard Electronic Stabilization Program ( ESP) helps in critical situations to prevent the vehicle from swerving by interfering specifically in the braking and engine management. Thus reaches the vehicle in critical situations maximum directional stability. The system can also be switched off if required, and it still remains active in the background for security in a tighter and sportier mode.

Thanks to the standard " Hill Start Assistant " can be approached quite comfortable and certainly due to stronger gradients.

Additional cost of the addition, a system is available, the emerging fatigue when registered, among others, a deviation from the normal steering behavior and recommends visual and acoustic signals, take a break.

The extra charge, theft warning system "Plus" features indoor lighting module of the roof lining on interior monitoring including electronic immobilizer and tow-away protection.

Motors

TSI

Only two gasoline engines for the Scirocco III were initially available: a 1.4-liter TSI with 118 kW ( 160 hp ) and the 2.0-liter TSI with 147 kW (200 hp). The combination of gasoline direct injection ( TSI) and intelligent engine can charge the petrol engines with TSI technology particularly effective work this way, they are supposed to combine advantages such as high performance and low fuel consumption. In addition, these newer TSI engines from Volkswagen based on a new basic engine design, the camshafts are driven, among others, via a timing chain instead of a timing belt and a volume flow-controlled oil pump feature.

1.4 TSI

The 1.4 -liter TSI engine has a " dual boot " ( "Twin Charger" ) - a compressor provides pressure at low engine speeds and a turbo charger for the second thrust at higher speed. This type of two different combined supercharger systems is not yet widespread. This loader combination of the engine delivers 118 kW (160 hp) and a torque of 240 Nm, which is already available from 1500 rpm to 4500 rpm and holding constant. Therefore, the 1.4-liter TSI "impressive sovereign on the gas and can be smoothly accelerate already from the lowest engine speeds. " Depends, according to Autobild

The operation of the VW "Twin Charger" a system within the regulated boost pressure of the compressor is off the idle speed of the engine available until from about 2000 rpm a turbocharger, the supercharging of the engine to be able to completely take over from about 3500 rpm the boost pressure. The compressor is then separated via a magnetic coupling.

This technique eliminates the main disadvantages of the two handlers:

  • The so-called " turbo lag " of the exhaust turbocharger in the lower speed will be bridged by the use of the compressor.
  • The compressor is disconnected from the crankshaft at high speeds and thus the engine power is no longer escapes.

In similar form this combined charge of a petrol engine has been used by a supercharger and turbocharger in the 1980s in the 200 series vehicles of the Group B rally car Lancia Delta S4.

In the fall of 2008 followed as an entry model or the 1.4-liter TSI with 90 kW (122 hp) with a simple turbocharging. An additional feature of this engine is integrated into the intake manifold intercooler. Likewise, the engine block has been adapted to power ratios and optimized weight.

2.0 TSI

With a 2.0 -liter TSI is a single turbocharger, which provides the engine charge. Since late 2009, there is the 2.0 -liter TSI engine - as in the Golf VI - now with 155 kW ( 211 hp) instead of previously 147 kW ( 200 hp )

Also in late 2009 they had a more sporty top model named Scirocco R, which is based on the VW Scirocco GT24 and is also equipped with the 2.0 -liter TSI engine, six- speed manual or optional with the 6- speed DSG. However, the engine has the " R " model 195 kW (265 hp) and a peak torque of 350 Nm at 2,500 to 5,000 rpm.

In addition, the top model of the Scirocco was equipped among other things with a sporty body body kit and other aluminum wheels, to distinguish it from the usual models. The Scirocco R is why, among other special R-Line bumper has front and rear. In addition, the enlarged side skirts, the striking rear spoiler in body color, darkened rear lights and a black grained diffuser at the rear make this equipment line unique.

2.0 TDI

The 2-liter TDI diesel engine with 103 kW ( 140 hp ) is available since autumn 2008. The TDI diesel engine with common -rail technology is according to VW with the highest currently attainable efficiency of up to 45 percent, a highly efficient internal combustion engine.
