Vyšný Medzev

Vyšný Medzev ( German Upper Metzenseifen, Hungarian Felsőmecenzéf ) is a city and a municipality in eastern Slovakia with a population of 533 (as at 31 December 2011).

Geography

Vyšný Medzev is in the upper Bodvatal on the southeast slope of the Slovak Ore Mountains, more specifically in the Volovské Hills and is joined by two smaller roads with two kilometers away small town Medzev. The area is characterized by a number of smaller ponds, these are a remnant of the old ironworks, which existed in the area. The regional capital Košice is located about 35 km to the east.

Although not a part of the municipality, the district belongs Bana Lucia east of the main town of the municipality.

History

The first written record dates from 1427, after the unified in the 14th century Metzenseifen was mentioned. Since 1628 the town developed into a small town and was granted market rights during the reign of Maria Theresa. During this time, the place had its best times and besides mining and smithy there were still some guilds such as a brewery and distillery other trades, such as coal and forestry. In 1828 there were 220 ​​houses and 1,938 inhabitants. But in the late 19th century there is a collapse, and the emigration of the population overseas, particularly in the area of Cleveland ( Ohio).

After the Second World War, most residents of German descent were expelled. 1960 Vyšný Medzev united with Nižný Medzev Medzev to the city, but since 1999 has been independent again. According to the Slovak 2001 census, the Germans formed by the 529 residents still a 12.7 percent minority.
