Warialda

Warialda is a town in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located about 175 kilometers north of Tamworth, about 113 km south of Goondiwindi and about 75 km east of Moree in the north-western slopes of the highlands of New England. The city is part of Local Government Area Gwydir Shire and at the 2006 census had a population of 1,206.

History

The name of the city on the Warialda Creek in German means place of wild honey.

Warialda was the first settlement on the north western slopes of the highlands, which became a town, probably in the 1830s. She was the administrative center of the Shire Yallaroi until it was merged with the neighboring Bingara Shire of Gwydir Shire. The first post office was opened on 18 January 1848.

Economy

Warialda serves as a center for the surrounding agricultural areas. There, wheat, millet and barley are grown and there are sheep and calves breeding. Some residents in the area also earn some money with hunting wild pigs, which are exported, one and all, mainly to Germany. In the Australian market, there are no wild boar meat.

Agriculture, health care and education are the main industries. There is also a supermarket, a general store, a butcher, pubs, golf and bowling club and various small shops.

Traffic

The Gwydir Highway (Australian Route 38 ) runs from west to east through the city along the Stephen Steet, which is one of the two main streets in Warialda simultaneously. West of Warialda opens the Fossickers Way ( State Road 95) in the Gwydir Highway. This tourist road forms the connection to Tamworth in the south. The state road 95 leads out of the city as Warialda Road further north to Bruxner Highway ( Route 44 Australian ).

About the rail link CountryLink Warialda is open daily - except Tuesdays - tethered to Inverell and Tamworth, from where one can continue even after Sydney. In addition, are of a thrice-weekly bus service operated by Grafton, from where you can continue on to Brisbane and Moree. The stop for the Country Link bus in front of the Tourist Office.

Churches

In Warialda there is one Anglican, Roman Catholic and Presbyterian church, and a Uniting Church.

The Anglican and the Catholic Church are at the Gwydir Highway on the south bank of the Warialda Creek.

Presbyterian Church

The Presbyterian Church of St. Stephen is located at the corner of Stephen Street and Long Street. Your front has three stained glass windows showing the Good Shepherd (John, chap. 10) as Australian scene.

The Presbyterian Manse consists of sandstone carved by prisoners, was formerly the old city jail from the. A local land owner used these stones to build his own house and donated the rest of the stones of the Church. On the Manse there are still Gefängniskritzeleien, such as "This is hell! " Upside down on the office window outside and "Lord remember you in my! " At the back of the building.

Education

In Walrialda there are several educational institutions such as Preschools, public and Catholic schools, a branch of TAFE ( adult education) and vocational training centers.

The Warialda Public School is one of the oldest public schools in New South Wales. It was founded in 1851. The Warialda High School was recognized as an excellent school. St. Joseph's Catholic School offers education from preschool to sixth grade.

Attractions

Between Warialda and Inverell is located on the Gwydir Highway Cranky skirt. According to legend, jumped in the 19th century, a Chinese, who was persecuted by the local police of this rock in a stream. Cranky Rock is a popular picnic spot today.

Events

In 2008, the first Honey Festival was held in Warialda. Throughout the day, there is an entertainment program with local artists. In addition, there is a market with stalls and refreshments. The highlight of the day is at 14.00 clock instead of a street parade with colored cars, which were built by local clubs and are manned by their members. On 21 November 2009 the festival was held for the second time.

Well-known residents

In Warialda Elizabeth Kenny (1880-1952), the world-renowned pioneer was in the field of treatment of poliomyelitis, was born. The baptismal font, was baptized in the Sister Kenny, is located in the Church of England in the Stewart Avenue and is still in use.

Also here was Olive Rose Fitzhardinge (1881-1956), a well-known rose breeder in Warrawee was in the 1930s (which is also the name of her most famous is Rose ), was born.
