The Fossickers Way is a main road in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales. It connects Nundle in the New England region with the Gwydir Highway in Warialda and Glen Innes and the New England Highway in Tamworth and Glen Innes.

Origin of the name

The name Fossickers Way refers to a specific group of cities in north-eastern New South Wales, where they found a large quantity of gold and precious stones. Mainly found Europeans from the 1850s these noble metals and minerals. Previously used Aboriginesstämme such as the Werawai from the area of Nundle these deposits to material for the manufacture of tools, eg Axes to win.

The Fossikers Way runs through the western slopes of the plateau of New England and runs so by some of the richest gem deposits in the world. There you will find sapphires, zircons, Jasper, Chrysoprase, Rhodonite, crystals, and even gold.

1851 was the gold digger Nathan Burrows in Nundle gold and told the same to his friends in Tamworth. Thus, the gold rush began in this area.

Course

From Nundle the road leading to the north, along the Peel River and on the shores of Chaffey Reservoir. In Nemingha she meets the New England Highway (N15 ) / Oxley Highway ( R34) and follows him a few miles west to Tamworth. There it branches off to the north and runs through the western foothills of the Moonbi Range to Manilla, where it crosses the Namoi River and its tributary the Manilla River upriver follows. About Barraba and Bingara the Fossickers Way continues north and crosses the Gwydir River, before moving on to the Warialda Gwydir Highway ( R38 ) is reached.

From there, the Warialda Road runs as a state road 95 north continue during the Fossickers Way follows the Gwydir Highway on Delungra and Inverell to Glen Innes. He crosses in Inverell the Macintyre River. In Glen Innes Fossickers the Way ends on the New England Highway (N15 ), while the Gwydir Highway continues to the east.

Overall, the distance is 390 km long and a popular alternative route between Sydney and Brisbane.

Events

Along the Way Fossickers there are many events throughout the year, eg the annual Tamworth Country Music Festival in January. The Fossickers Way Treasure Hunt is also an annual event that takes participants through all eight towns on the road.
