The Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde ( officially seaside resort of Warnemünde ) is a district in the north of the Hanseatic city of Rostock in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern.

The Warnow flows into the Baltic Sea and gave the place its name, it was first mentioned in 1195 in the Danish records. With a 150 meter wide sandy beach of Warnemünde has the widest sandy beach of the German Baltic coast. Each summer the Warnemünde Week and the Hanse Sail in Warnemünde. History

There was in the history not only Warnemünde west of the old stream. This was not the original port of Rostock the city, because this was further east. The exact location is not known. The Rostock already received on October 12, 1264 the municipal law on decades prior to the incorporation of the princely Warnemünde in the West.

The city of Rostock acquired on March 11, 1323, written in 1200, the village of Warnemünde to secure access to the sea. Sports

Due to the low flow and the good wind conditions the sail area is suitable Warnemünde for kitesurfing, surfing, windsurfing, diving and swimming. Economy

The tourism and fishing industries were and are important economic activities in Warnemünde. Since 1946 there is the Warnow Werft, which was in 1960 the largest shipbuilding company of the GDR. In 1990, the Warnow Werft GmbH was founded in Warnemünde, which changed its name after the acquisition by the Kværner Group under the name Kværner Warnow Werft GmbH Rostock. In the 1990s, the shipyard has been completely renewed and large parts of the production rebuilt.
