Bypass of Deer Park

The circumvention of Deer Park, a western suburb of Melbourne, was opened to traffic on April 5, 2009. It connects the Western Freeway in Ravenhall with the Western Ring Road in Derrimut. This 9.3 km long piece of urban highway cost AU $ 333 million, including the amount of free access Leakes Road in Rockbank.

History

The object of this city motorway is the relief of Ballarat Road in Melbourne, which leads to the Western Ring Road. Due to the rapid population growth in Deer Park and Sunshine (approx. 8.7 %) and seven sets of traffic lights between the Western Ring Road and the beginning of Western Freeway, there was frustrating long waits again on this route, the daily of 70,000 vehicles of which 10 % trucks, is traversed.

The bypass has been proposed since the completion of the Western Ring Road, but postponed because between the State of Victoria and the Commonwealth of Australia unexplained financing. 2004 announced the Australian Government that the bypass of Deer Park should be built as part of a package, a grant of AU $ 1.4 billion received for the Victoria. It was assumed that the travel times would be shortened by about 15 minutes through the new road.

Construction began in August 2006 and was carried out in a joint venture between VicRoads and, ' Leighton Contractors ''. The first section was opened to traffic in December 2007.

On 4 March 2009, it was announced that the circumvention of Deer Park early April 2009 the traffic should be passed, more than 8 months before the planned date.

Realignment at Anthony's Cutting

This section of road between Bacchus Marsh and Melton was one of the most dangerous in the entire route and did not correspond to the modern freeway standard. The steep climbs and tight corners at the 5 -km-long piece led to 21 major traffic accidents in just 5 years until 2010. More than 29,000 vehicles, of which more than 4,000 trucks use the route daily. The new route was opened to traffic on 27 June 2011, 9 months before the scheduled time.

The project included:

  • Extension of Woolpack Road Bacchus Marsh north to a new connection to the Western Freeway, including a bridge over the River Lerderberg
  • Transfer of Bulmans Road over the existing Western Freeway.
  • Transfer of Hopetoun Road via the new freeway with entrances and exits to Melbourne
  • New bridges for the freeway on the Djerriwarrh Creek and the Cowans Road, or the Pyrites Creek.

Planned expansion

There are still many at level crossings on the freeway, especially in the area around Rockbank and at Woodmans Hill, just east of Ballarat.

  • Development and improvement of road safety between Rockbank and Melton, financed through AusLink 2 (2009-2014 ).
  • Extension to Westn to Ararat and perhaps even to Stawell, also part of AusLink 2
