William Cary Renfrow

William Cary Renfrow ( born March 15, 1845 in Smithfield, North Carolina, † January 31, 1922 in Bentonville, Arkansas ) was an American politician and governor of the then Oklahoma Territory.

Life

He attended a public school, but then joined the Army of the Confederate States of America and fought in the American Civil War.

In 1865, he moved to Arkansas. After the release of Oklahoma to settlement, he moved into local Norman, where he worked as a banker. In 1893 he became governor until 1897. During this time, the Cherokee Strip was opened for settlement. He was involved in the Oklahoma Historical Society. After that he was in the mining business in Missouri and worked in the oil and gas industry in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. Renfrow died on a trip to Bentonville and was buried in Russellville (Arkansas ).
