Microsoft Windows Server 2012, working title Microsoft Windows Server 8 is an operating system of Windows series of the software manufacturer Microsoft and the successor to Windows Server 2008 R2.
It is the server version of Windows 8 and was released on September 4, 2012, the further development of Windows Server 2012 R2 in October 2013.
Windows Server 2012 uses the new ModernUI surface, which is similar to the interface of Windows Phone 8 and thus better designed for touch screens.
An alternative is the so-called Core installation, which completely eliminates the need for a graphical user interface and configured only through the Windows Command Prompt and PowerShell. The Core installation is the default and provides better performance for applications, particularly when used with Hyper- V or SQL Server.
The third option is to use the minimal server interface. It is a limited graphical interface, with all the graphical administration applications are installed, but not all libraries and settings for adapting the interface.
The Task Manager has been completely revised and thus solves the old off. Inter alia, running applications are classified into categories ( for example, system processes and the metro applications and "normal" applications). Non-active applications are stopped for reasons of performance and marked as " Suspended " in the task manager the currently current development version. Its new interface is designed to simplify finding applications simpler and more enjoyable.
The installation wizard of the Active Directory Domain Services was replaced by a new section in the Server Manager, the Active Directory Administrative Center. The Active Directory Recycle Bin can be accessed in Windows Server 2012 using a graphical interface. The password policies as well as the upgrade process of the Active Directory have been simplified.
Windows Server 2012 contains. In the Standard and Datacenter Edition, an updated version of the virtualization platform Hyper- V With Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper- V has received further improvements: UEFI boot of VMs, improved copy and paste, automatic activation of Windows in VMs, Gen-2 VMs with synthetic devices, faster live migration through compression, replication interval is customizable and available on other locations expandable
With Windows Server 2012, the new file system keeps refs collection, which serves as a supplement to NTFS. It has been specifically designed for data storage on file servers and therefore supports neither removable media nor is it bootable.
A further innovation is the support of SMB 3, enabling a faster and more stable access to file shares is possible than with the previous protocol versions. This is primarily aimed at application servers that store their data in a file share, and less on the user and workstation. By SMB 3.0, a client can also maintain its connection to a resource ( file or folder on the file server ) when done within a file server cluster failover from one cluster server to another. In previous protocol versions the client connection was interrupted when a failover occurs, causing many applications ran through loss of data access in a fault condition. The feature is called " SMB Transparent Failover ".
Furthermore, SMB 3.0 supports additional features such as RDMA acceleration or the use of several parallel TCP connections between client and server ( " SMB Multi Channel" ). However, this requires a hardware equipment, which is usually only available in the server backend of a data center and not in a workstation.
Dynamic access control
The Dynamic Access Control (English: Dynamic Access Control DAC) controls access to files through metadata. DAC acts in addition to Active Directory security policies.
DAC, for example, to make sure that files are protected even after moving to a different directory from unauthorized access and secured in the backup.
When IIS 8.0 ( Internet Information Service ) Extended Validation certificates are no longer loaded individually for each server, but stored centrally on a file server. Furthermore, the computational power of CPUs for individual sites can be throttled, rather than shut down the entire website.
All system settings in the Microsoft Management Console and the Server Manager are converted and processed in PowerShell commands. Alternatively, all system settings can be performed manually directly on the PowerShell. In addition, Windows PowerShell Web Access application allows configuration via a web browser. Moreover, the direct execution of Windows Workflow Foundation applications is possible.
Microsoft Windows Azure
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 provides a direct connection to Microsoft Windows Azure. Allowing the server to be backed up as needed on the Azure cloud. Also, additional services, such as virtual machines, or SQL Azure can be integrated.
Introduced in Windows Server 2008 R2 Direct Access has been improved that no PKI is required and IPv6 bridging technologies are already in the server mitdabei.
Microsoft held from 13 September to 16 September 2011, the conference "Build Windows ", was presented at the Windows Server 8. At this conference, a developer version was released, which makes it possible to get a first impression of the new Windows Server version. This preliminary version was made available to subscribers of the Microsoft Developer Network on September 9, 2011. A public beta version was released on February 29, 2012. From 1 June 2012, the release candidate version was free, but require registration to download from Microsoft. The final version has been available since September 4, 2012.
Windows Server 2012 R2
This succession version and server version of Windows 8.1 was released in October 2013.
