Wizards of OS

Wizards of OS, short WOS, was in Berlin from 1999 to 2006 four times a week's conference. Her topic was the potential of the PC and the Internet, open source, open content, open communication and open collaboration in the creation of knowledge and the knowledge order of digital media in general.

Background

Wizards of OS was organized by the author Volker Grassmuck in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education. Involved in the organization were Thorsten Schilling and Tilman Baumgärtel.

The conference was interdisciplinary and wanted " a platform for an encounter of 'hard' science and technology 'soft' cultural and social sciences, by hackers and lawyers, business people and artists, activists and politicians " offer. So she moved regularly to celebrities from the open source world. Among the speakers at the WOS were among legal experts and computer scientists, but also journalists and numerous artists and representatives of human rights and development organizations.

In addition to lectures and workshops, there was always also a social program with concerts, art exhibitions and film screenings, key signing parties and award ceremonies. Wizards of OS was planned in advance as a four-part conference series, however, short-term as ultimately performed. The name itself is a corruption of Wizard of Oz The "OS" in the name stands for operating system (and not, as is often assumed "open source" ). Events

1999

Wizards of OS - Open source and free software from 16 to 17 July 1999 at the House of World Cultures in Berlin was the first event in Germany, the culture, philosophy, politics and economics of free software devoted himself.

Around 300 to 700 visitors heard about 50 lectures by, inter alia, Detlef Borchers, Dieter Ernst, Volker Grassmuck, Benedict Harlin, Friedrich Kittler, Armin Medosch, Tim O'Reilly, Peter Weibel Thorsten Schilling, Alexei Shulgin and Norbert Szyperski.

Richard Stallman presented the concept of a free encyclopedia, which he started as GNUpedia later. In the conference, the project Oekonux found its origin, it has set itself the task of investigating what potential has free software to change the prevailing political and economic structures fundamentally.

2001

The second edition was held under the motto open cultures & Free Knowledge from the 11th to October 13th, 2001 again at the House of World Cultures instead.

The approximately 100 speakers included Detlef Borchers, Hans Jürgen Garstka, Volker Grassmuck, Georg Christof Florian Greve, Johnny Haeusler, Sascha Kösch, Stefan Krempl, Maurizio Lazzarato, Bo Leuf, Thomas Macho, Armin Medosch, Axel Metzger, Andy Müller- Maguhn, Janko Röttgers and Thorsten Schilling.

2004

WOS3 (The Future of the Digital Commons ) took place until June 12, 2004 at the Berlin Congress Center and four other venues in Berlin on 10.

Lectures, there were, among others by Ross Anderson, Markus Beckedahl, Detlef Borchers, Wolfgang Coy, Dragan Espenschieds, Stefan degree man, Volker Grassmuck, Benedict Harlin, Stevan Harnad, Stefan Krempl, Thomas Krüger, Felix von Leitner, Weni Markowski, Armin Medosch, Eben Moglen, Sollfrank, Rena tangent, Michael Tiemann, Jimmy Wales and Harald Welte.

As part of the conference program, inter alia, found the international premiere of the first feature film under CC license, CH7 instead.

2006

WOS4 - Information Freedom Rules was held from 14th to 16th September 2006 in Columbia Hall and four other venues in Berlin. The main topics authorship and culture, economy and work, as well as rules and tools of freedom.

Among the 1000 participants included 120 accredited journalists and bloggers, as well as 90 speakers and workshop leaders, including Yochai Benkler, Detlef Borchers, Christian von Borries, Danny 's brother, Wolfgang Coy, Urs Gasser, Volker Grassmuck, Martin Haase, Armin Medosch, Janko Röttgers, Larry Sanger, Thorsten Schilling and Hal Varian.

Lawrence Lessig launched his project here registeredcommons.org, Larry Sanger presented to the public its plans for the Citizendium ago. Helge Haas hosted the public event show of free knowledge.
