Yael Bartana

Yael Bartana (Hebrew יעל ברתנא ;) ( * 1970 in Afula, Israel) is an Israeli multi-media artist who lives in Israel and Berlin. She works with videos and video installations, sound installations and other multimedia technologies.

Work

Yael Bartana is considered the protagonist of the video art, with its own very special form of expression. It combines documentary aspects with poetic alienation in their art. Her films often address the social rituals of everyday life in Israel, which is characterized by states of emergency and danger of war.

Life

Yael Bartana studied art in Jerusalem with a focus on photography. She had to study in Toronto, where she joined the artistic medium and since then primarily works with movies. In Jerusalem, she attended classes at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and made degree at the Art Academy in Jerusalem. Then Bartana went for two and a half years in the United States and worked in the advertising film industry. After staying in the U.S., she moved to Amsterdam and returned to the Rijksakademie van Beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam art back. In Amsterdam she turned in 2000, "Profile ", an artistic representation of a course of fire by Israeli soldiers.

Her art is recognized by international exhibitions among others in New York City, St. Gallen, Warsaw and the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and participated in many biennials and group exhibitions. In 2004 she was awarded the Dorothea von Stetten Art Prize. In 2007 she took part in documenta 12 in Kassel with the video and sound installation Summer Camp ( 2007), which documents an action build upon when people from different countries a Palestinian house again, which had been demolished by the Israeli authorities.
