Zaman Shah Durrani

Zaman Shah (* 1770, † 1844) was from 1793 to 1800, the third ruler ( Emir ) of the Durrani Empire on the territory of today's Afghanistan.

Life

Zaman Shah Durrani was the grandson of Ahmad Shah Durrani and the fifth from twenty-three sons of Timur Shah Durrani. He was named after his father's death in 1793, ruler of the Durrani Empire. He defeated his brothers as a competitor to the rule with the help of the leader of the Barakzai Payenda Sardar Khan. From his last challenger Mahmud he forced an oath of allegiance, which he left for the rule of Herat. His sphere of influence thus comprised the territory between Kabul and Herat, the separation of power between Kabul as a center of power and the de facto independent Herat, but could not get more than a century, the rule of Kandahar has always remained controversial.

Like his father, Zaman Shah also tried to gain control of India, which he was not successful and led to a conflict with the British. The British Fath Ali Shah led the Shah of Persia, a raid on the Durrani Empire, which Zaman Shah put a stop to more aggressive designs on India in favor of the need to defend its own territory.

In his own country, the conditions developed initially good for the Durrani rulers. At first he forced Mahmud of Herat in Persian exile, this allied himself but with Fateh Khan and conquered with its financial and human support and the support of Fath Khan Barakzay, the eldest son of Sardar Payenda Khan, Kandahar in 1800 and moved up to Kabul. Zaman Shah quickly returned from his campaign in India back, where he had the Sikh Ranjit Singh used to the Governor of Lahore. He was taken prisoner on the way handed over to Mahmud, blinded and imprisoned from 1800 in Bala Hissar in Kabul. Little is known about his last years, he spent offentbar the rest of his life, nearly 40 years in prison, a period in which there were some political changes in the area of Afghanistan.
