Zemplín (village)

Zemplín ( Semplin German, Hungarian Zemplén, Ukrainian- Russian Цемно / Zemno, latin Zemplinium ) is a municipality in Okres Trebišov, Košice Region, Eastern Slovakia. It lies at the foot of the mountain on the river Bodrog Zemplínske Hills, south of the confluence of the Latorica and Ondava. The closest cities are Kráľovský Chlmec the east and Trebišov in the north.

The history of the village is the castle Zemplín (now in ruins ) connected. The castle was first mentioned in 1214 as de Zemlu comes curialis. The name comes from the Slavic word zem (soil ). The castle and the town were from the 12th century to 1748 the seat of the county Semplin ( in the 13th century but also in Sárospatak ) before the administration was moved to Sátoraljaújhely. Until 1918, the municipality in the county Semplin the Kingdom of Hungary belonged and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award they came from 1938 to 1945 for a short time again to Hungary.

Today, living in the city about 400 inhabitants, of whom 28.3 % Slovaks, 64.2 % Hungarians, 6.3% Roma and 1% are Czechs ( 2001 census).
