Žilina District

The Okres Žilina is an administrative unit in the north of Slovakia with 154 596 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) and an area of 815 km ². Clockwise it borders on the Okresy Kysucké Nové Mesto, Čadca, Dolny Kubin, Martin, Prievidza, Ilava and Považska Bystrica (last three mentioned in the Trenčín Region ), Bytča and again Čadca.

The landscape varies from the valley of Žilinská kotlina, extending from Fačkov about Rajec and Žilina to about Terchová and where the majority of the population is concentrated, Hills on the highlands Kysucká highlands in the northeast and Súľovské in the west, to the mountains Javorníky northwest of Žilina and in particular the Small Fatra, which forms two subdivisions Lucanska Fatra in the south and Krivánska Fatra in the north, the eastern boundary of the Okres. Historically, the district is located entirely within the former county Trenčín (see also List of historic counties of Hungary ).
