Gondo

Zwischbergen ( Valais German: Zwischbärgu ) is a municipality in the district south of the Simplon Brig in the canton of Valais.

The municipality of the much better known Gondo heard on the Simplon pass road. On its website, the municipality therefore also referred to as community Gondo Zwischbergen. Officially, however, is only the name of community Zwischbergen.

Geography

The Zwischbergen Valley is surrounded to the south and the north of up to 3500 meters high peaks and wears his descriptive name so rightly. The church is located at 1,359 m above sea level. M. At their passes an old connection path from Brig to Domodossola, which bypassed the Gondo gorge. He leads over the Simplon Pass, the village of Simplon, on the Feerberg and Furggu by Zwischbergen and continue on the Swiss-Italian border at Passo di Monscera the Valle di Bognanco. At the end of the valley, the city is Domodossola.

By Zwischbergental leads a mule track over the Zwischbergenpass to Saas -Almagell in the Saas Valley.

Attractions

Gold mines

Already in Roman times, the gold mines were known. A first heyday, the mines experienced between 1660-1691 by Kaspar Jodok of Stockalperschloss. Between 1840 and 1897 the mines were exploited by French companies before they fell into bankruptcy. There are now guided tours through the old mines.
