Balakliia

Balaklija (Ukrainian Балаклія; Russian Балаклея / Balakleja ) is a city in eastern Ukraine and the administrative center of the Kharkiv Oblast of the largest Rajons with about 30,000 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

Balaklija is located on the left bank of the Donets about 100 km southeast of the Oblastzentrums Kharkiv. The town has a railway station on the route Moscow - Donbass. Still belongs to the municipality of a settlement name Krejdjanka (Ukrainian Крейдянка ) with 31 inhabitants.

History

Founded as a Cossack settlement in 1663, the town received its name from the here opens into the Donets river of the same. From 1796 to 1891 the place was called after the Russian city of Serpukhov Nowoserpuchow. Since 1923, the center of the Rajons, Balaklija has city status since 1938. The occupation of the city by the Wehrmacht took 10 December 1941 to 5 February 1943.
