Barvinkove

Barwinkowe (Ukrainian Барвінкове; Russian Барвенково / Barwenkowo ) is a city in the Ukraine in the Kharkiv Oblast with 10,377 inhabitants ( 2013). It is the center of the Rajons Barwinkowe in the southern part of the oblast.

Location

Barwinkowe is located 132 km south-east of the river Kharkiv Suchyj Torez.

History

The town was founded in the 17th century by the Cossack leader Ivan Barwinok and named after him, 1938, the city rights were awarded the place. With the abolition of serfdom and connection to the railroad in 1869, the place was booming. No later than 1894, the first steam mill was built in the village and rapid industrialization of the settlement began. Before the First World War, 24,000 people lived in Barwinkowe, there was a trade school, several schools ( including a German school ) and two Orthodox churches. During the Second World War, the city had suffered greatly from the war, he was one of the sites of the Battle of Kharkov.
