Canton of Nontron

The Canton Nontron is a French administrative unit in the district Nontron in the Dordogne and the Aquitaine region; its chief town is Nontron, its representative in the General Council of the department since 2011 of the PS belonging Pascal Bourdeau.

Geography

The canton is 266.31 km ² and had (2006) 9,089 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 34 inhabitants per km ². He is on average 197 meters above sea level, between 115 m in Javerlhac -et -la -Chapelle -Saint -Robert and 355 m in Abjat -sur- Bandiat.

The canton is bordered to the north by the Canton of Bussière- Badil, in the north- east to the Canton Saint -Mathieu (Haute -Vienne ), to the east by the Canton of Saint- Pardoux- la- Rivière, on the south by the Canton Champagnac -de- Belair, on the southwest by the Canton of Mareuil and to the west by the Canton Montbron (Charente).

The largest part of the canton is drained by the Bandiat, the extreme south and southwest of the Nizonne and only a very small area at Sceau - Saint-Angel of a right tributary of the River Dronne.

The Canton Nontron is an integral part of the Périgord -Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Geology

Geologically can be split in two the canton Nontron. The northeast part still belongs to the Variscan basement of the Massif Central, the south-western part is underlain by generally flat-lying to slightly south-southwest incident, Mesozoic sediments of the Aquitaine basin. The bedrock forms a sloping slightly to the southwest panel plaice, who is elevated slightly over the pelvic sediments and has an average of greater altitudes. It is made up of various paragneisses and from the southern part of Piégut -Pluviers - granodiorite. The sediments consist of Jura ( arkoses, dolomites, shales, and Oolithkalke micrites ) and Upper Cretaceous ( Cenomanian to Turonian ).

History

The human settlement in the canton Nontron can be traced back at least to 10,000 BC, the Neolithic period (late Magdalenian ). Examples include the well-known cave of Teyjat and the nearby Abri Mège. In the cave of Teyjat found on 6 sections distributed fine, very realistic, engravings of about 40 characters, including Bovidae ( bison, deer, reindeer, cattle).

From the remains of the megalithic dolmens of Veaubrunet at Teyjat and the Menhir of Fixard in the municipality of Saint- Estèphe come.

The Romans have left some traces. Also worth mentioning are a complex of villas from the 1st century at Lussas -et- Nontronneau (Chez Vayssière ) and the Castrum of Nontron with street remains at Poperdu and La Roderie de Bord.

In the Middle Ages, Romanesque churches were built in most towns to visit, for example, in:

  • Le Bourdeix - with round defense tower from the 12th century, altered in the 15th century
  • Lussas - Church of St. Étienne, 12th century
  • Lussas -et- Nontronneau - Fontroubade, Cistercian chapel, 12th century
  • Saint- Estèphe - changed dramatically in the 15th century and later
  • Saint-Front- sur- Nizonne - 12th century
  • Saint -Martial -de- Valette - 12th century
  • Saint -Martin- le-Pin - 12th century
  • Saint -Angel - changed in the 18th century; Gothic chapel in La Pouyade

  • Saint- Estèphe - castle ruins at Le Briodet or Le Brieudet from the 13th century and the 15th century
  • Saint-Front- sur- Nizonne - Castle Bagatelle, partly from the 17th century, situated on a former Roman road
  • Saint -Martial -de- Valette - castle and chateau Puyfaiteau Montcheuil
  • Sceau -Saint -Angel - Castle L'Age (or location ), ruins of the 15th century

The population in the canton Nontron clearly focuses on the community Nontron, which also has the highest population density, and its neighboring village of Saint -Martial -de- Valette. However, of area, the largest municipality is Javerlhac -et -la -Chapelle -Saint -Robert.
