Gilbert De La Matyr

Gilbert De La Matyr ( born July 8, 1825 Pharsalia, Chenango County, New York, † May 17, 1892 in Akron, Ohio ) was an American politician. Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After a good primary education was trained as a clergyman Gilbert De La Matyr of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1854. In this church he went up to the management level. For a period he was even their leader. During the Civil War he was involved in the formation of an artillery regiment from New York. In this unit, he served three years as a military chaplain. After the war he worked as a minister in several major cities. In this way he came also to Indianapolis, capital of the state of Indiana.

Politically, joined De La Matyr the short-lived Greenback Party. In the congressional elections of 1878 he was in the seventh election district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Republican John Hanna on March 4, 1879. Since he resigned in 1880 to run again, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1881.

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives De La Matyr pulled her in 1881 to Denver in Colorado, where he continued his spiritual activities. Since 1889 he worked in Akron also as a clergyman. There he is on May 17, 1892 and passed away.
