Granville Barrere

Granville Barrere ( born July 11, 1829 in New Market, Highland County, Ohio; † January 13, 1889 in Canton, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Granville Barrere was a nephew of Congressman Nelson Barrere (1808-1883) from Ohio. He attended the common schools and the Augusta College in Kentucky and the Marietta College in Ohio. After a subsequent law degree in 1853 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Marion (Arkansas ) to work in this profession. In 1855 he moved to Bloomington in Illinois. In the same year he transferred his residence and his law firm to Canton. He was a member of the Education Committee and the council in his new home.

Politically, Barrere joined the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1872 he was in the ninth constituency of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrats Thompson W. McNeely on March 4, 1873. Since he was not nominated by his party for re-election in 1874, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1875.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Granville Barrere again practiced as a lawyer. He died on January 13, 1889 in Canton, where he was also buried.
