Montsinéry-Tonnegrande

Montsinéry - Tonnegrande is a commune with 2346 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Overseas Territory French Guiana near the Atlantic coast of South America. From 1969 to 1994, the community was still called Tonnegrande - Montsinéry.

Geography

The municipality is located in the southwest of the capital Cayenne and consists of the two parts of the village and Monsinéry Tonnegrande. The territory includes part of the Guyanese highlands, which drags over the whole northern South America. In addition to large rainforest areas covers the territory of Montsinéry - Tonnegrande also a variety of small rivers and streams that flow a little later in the Atlantic.

History

In Monsinéry - Tonnegrande there is a former penal colony (French Bagne ), Camp Crique Anguille. From 1930 until its closure in 1945 convicts ( a French colony at the time) were there mainly from Indochina held.
