Rapides Parish, Louisiana
The Rapides Parish (French: Paroisse of Rapides ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 131 613 inhabitants and a population density of 38.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Alexandria.
Geography
The Parish is located northwest of the geographic center of Louisiana, in the West is about 80 km from Texas to the East and about 100 km from Mississippi and has an area of 3527 square kilometers, of which 102 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes:
History
The Rapides Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original Parishes.

According to the census in 2000 in Rapides Parish 126 337 people living in 47 120 households, and 33,125 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 66.51 percent White, 30.43 percent Black or African American, 0.74 percent Native American, 0.86 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.42 percent from other races groups; 1.01 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.38 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 47 120 households out of which 34.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.7 percent were married couples living together, 16.8 percent were single mothers, 29.7 percent were non-families, 26.0 percent of all households and 10.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 27.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males statistically. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,856, and the median income for a family was $ 36,671. Males have a median income of $ 29,775, women $ 20,483. The per capita income was $ 16,088. 16.4 percent of families 20.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 26.3 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 16.3 percent of those 65 years.
