St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana

The St. Bernard Parish (French: Paroisse de Saint -Bernard ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 35 897 inhabitants and according to a population density of 11.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Chalmette.

Geography

The Parish is located in southeastern Louisiana, is bounded on the north by Lake Borgne, in the north- east to the south by the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 4646 square kilometers, of which 3441 square miles are water. It is bordered by the following Parishes:

History

The Parish was named after the patron saint of Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid. St. Bernard Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original Parishes.

According to the census in 2000 lived in St. Bernard Parish 67 229 people in 25 123 households, and 18,289 families. The population density was 56 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.29 percent White, 7.62 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 1.32 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.73 percent from other races groups; 1.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 5.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 25 123 households out of which 33.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.4 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers, 27.2 percent were non-families, 22.9 percent of all households and 10.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.12.

In relation to the parish the population was spread out 25.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 35,939, and the median income for a family was $ 42,785. Males have a median income of $ 34,303, women $ 24,009. The per capita income was $ 16,718. 10.5 percent of families 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 16.5 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 11.4 percent of those 65 years.
