Thomas R. Underwood

Thomas Rust Underwood ( born March 3, 1898 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky, † June 29, 1956 in Lexington, Kentucky ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party. He was a member of both houses of Congress as a representative of the state of Kentucky.

Before embarking on a political career, Underwood worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper Lexington Herald; at times he was professionally active in the administration of the State, Kentucky, and on the racecourse.

As of January 3, 1949 Thomas Underwood was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the Democrats. After two years he was confirmed in office; However, he made his mandate then fast again, when he was appointed on 19 March 1951 as successor to the late Virgil Chapman for U.S. Senator for Kentucky. He went on to finish his lasting until January 3, 1955 term, but had to the following year a by-election questions and succumbed while the Republicans John Sherman Cooper. So he resigned from the Congress on November 4, 1952.

After his time in the Senate, he returned to Lexington and worked until his death in 1956 again for the local newspaper.
