Volkerode

Volkerode is a municipality in the Thuringian district of calibration field. It belongs to the administrative community Ershausen / Geismar.

Geographical location

Volkerode located approximately 14 km south of Heiligenstadt and spreads out in the valley of the chicken Bach, a western tributary of the Rode, at the Ostabachung of the ridge Gobert. Neighboring towns are Wiesenfeld in the east-northeast and Pfaffschwende in the southeast.

History

Volkerode was first documented in 1227 as " Wacolderot ". The village was until 1802 owned by the archdiocese Kurmainz, landlords were the Junker of Volkerode. 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then came to the Kingdom of Westphalia. From 1815 to 1945 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony. From 1945 to 1949, the city was part of the Soviet zone of occupation and since 1949 part of the GDR. From 1961 until the turn and reunion 1989/1990 Volkerode was affected by the closure of the nearby German border. Since 1990, the city is part of the re-established state of Thuringia.

The Hühnerbach allowed the operation of two mills in the 16th century an upper mill is mentioned in the 19th century, the chickens mill and the mill damage here undetectable as grinding mills. After the abandonment of the mills was a private residence from the damage mill, the chickens mill was converted into a guesthouse.
