1950 Belgian Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Belgium 1950 was held on 18 June on the circuit of Spa Francorchamps in Spa and was the fifth race of the Formula 1 season 1950.

Background

The course of Spa-Francorchamps was rebuilt for the Grand Prix. The course had only a slow curve - which still driven La Sorce - all other curves were straightened and widened the road.

Training

On the extremely fast course, the three Alfa Romeo were even more favored than in the other races. So it surprised no one that they formed the front row, where Farina was on pole position - thanks to an over Fangio equally fast, but stalled earlier time of 4:37,0 min. Alberto Ascari first appeared with the non-turbocharged 4.5 -liter Ferrari, but was able to secure only the seventh time. Teammate Villoresi in the 1.5-liter supercharged Ferrari was two seconds faster and secured a place in the second row.

Race

At the start of Fangio and Farina were expected to immediately lead. Villoresi, however, managed to oust Fagioli for a round of third place. Raymond Sommer was the best non- Alfa Romeo and initially displaced Villoresi of fourth place and even took over for 5 rounds the lead when the Alfa Romeo succession had to pit to refuel. The high fuel consumption was the Achilles heel of the otherwise vastly superior cars, they had to fill up twice during a Grand Prix in contrast to its competitors. So it happened that summer was still before the third Alfa Romeo, as his engine on lap 20 broke. However, the triple seemed to be sure of success, the Milan lost in the final laps as Farina with falling oil pressure the boxes need to start and was still intercepted by Rosier.
