1953 Swiss Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Switzerland 1953 took place on August 23, instead of on the track Bremgarten in Bern and was the eighth of nine races of the Formula 1 season 1953.

Background

When Maserati Hermann Lang replaced the injured González. Otherwise, the team went on with his regular cast Fangio, Bonetto and Marimon. Even with Ferrari changed in Team Cast ( Ascari, Farina, Villoresi and Hawthorn ) nothing. In Gordini of Americans Fred Wacker drove the third car, Connaught was missing as well as Cooper. Again with this was the English HWM team, Paul Frère, Lance Macklin and Albert Scherrer sent into the race.

Training

As usual, in 1953, the Ferrari and the Maserati specific training events. Juan Manuel Fangio secured in Maserati pole position ahead of Ascari and Farina. The fourth fastest time achieved surprisingly Maurice Trintignant in the Gordini, who had killed two per works cars from Maserati and Ferrari. Fred Wacker had a serious accident in which he was so injured that he could not participate in the race in training.

Race

Fangio used his pole position to the best start, but the leadership was able to defend only up to half of the first round, when it overtook Ascari. Farina and Trintignant was their good start positions, however, do not implement, Farina dropped back to ninth place at the start, was in the course of the first round to the seventh spot fight his way. Trintignant came back as the ninth after the first lap, Rosier and Swaters not finished the first round. By the seventh round, Farina had fought his way to third place, one lap later Fangio coincided with gearbox problems Ascari from and exchanged three laps later with Bonetto the car and dropped back to 9 when he had to hold the next round again to a to change the wheel. This slipped Farina ago on the second place ahead of Villoresi, but on lap 20 turned on sprayed by Peter Hirt oil, its cooler and damaged in the course of another race a few times had to visit the pits to refill water. Fangio managed to make up some places in Bonettos car, but fell in the 29th round with engine failure. On lap 40 the leading Ascari drove with engine trouble on the box and so lost over a minute. He fell back to fourth place. Farina led now before Marimon and Hawthorn. Four laps later Hawthorn overtook the Argentine who had to give up two more laps later with engine failure. Ascaris car was after the pit stop again perfectly okay and he launched a comeback. On lap 51 he overtook Hawthorn and two laps later he passed Farina and was back in the lead so that he could defend to the target. He won the race ahead of Farina and Hawthorn. What nobody could have guessed at that time, it was his last victory in a World Championship race.
