1966–67 Intertoto Cup

The sixth and final competition for the International Football Cup ( IFC) was carried out between June 1966 and May 1967. The following eleven European football associations had participated:

  • Belgium
  • Federal Republic of Germany Federal Republic of Germany
  • Germany Democratic Republic in 1949 German Democratic Republic
  • France France
  • Italy Italy
  • Yugoslavia Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
  • Netherlands The Netherlands
  • Poland Poland
  • Sweden Sweden
  • Switzerland Switzerland
  • Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia

After only eight organizations had participated in the previous year, the IFC found with the added jointed associations from Belgium, France and Italy and now with 40 participating teams once again a greater interest. The last edition of the competition was won by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Preliminary remarks

As usual, the preliminary round, the quarter - and semi-finals were played with the return games. There were two divisions formed, Department A was divided into four groups and department B in six groups in which each played four teams. A regional breakdown as last year there was not time, so it came to duels against DFB DFV again. The group winners were each next round. As with Gornik Zabrze and Vorwärts Berlin two group winners for the European Champions Cup were qualified, they had to retire from the contest in accordance with IFC regulations. Thus, it came with the remaining eight teams to a real fair quarterfinals. The cup winner was determined traditionally after the semi-final in two playoffs. With Eintracht Frankfurt again won a German team the trophy. As UEFA now with Master, Cup Winners' Cup and Fairs Cup held next to the IFC three other competitions, the associations involved in putting increasing scheduling difficulties. Therefore, the new Intertoto Cup was lifted from the baptism instead of the IFC for the 1967/68 season, which was only played in the group matches without an overall winner.

For the competition 1966/67, the DFB had nominated the following five teams:

  • Eintracht Frankfurt (7th in the Bundesliga 1965/66 )
  • Eintracht Braunschweig ( 10 )
  • 1 FC Kaiserslautern ( 15 )
  • Karlsruher SC ( 16 )
  • Borussia Neunkirchen ( 17 )
