Background

Since the Mosport International Raceway, where the Canadian Grand Prix had been held in previous years, no longer met the then-current safety requirements, the organizers decided to stage the race in 1978 at the Circuit Île Notre -Dame in Montreal. This was after the Olympic Games in 1976 on an artificial island in the St Lawrence River, which was part of the Expo 67, created.

Nelson Piquet, who had already signed a Brabham factory rider contract for the 1979 season, was allowed to be driving as a guest a third car for his new team. This had been previously scheduled for the weekend at the U.S. Grand Prix West, but could not be implemented in such a short time.

The Team Ensign Racing completed the last race of the season with only one vehicle for Derek Daly. Riccardo Patrese, whose participation had been denied at the Grand Prix of Italy at the U.S. Grand Prix for his alleged guilt for the mass accident, however, returned to the participants.

Training

Due to the relatively narrow track the number of starters for the race was limited to 22 pilots. Despite 28 Present candidates, however, there was no pre-qualification.

The training took place partly in humid conditions.

Jean -Pierre Jarier reached the total third and final pole position of his Formula 1 career, just at a faster merely about a Hundetstelsekunde lap time when Jody Scheckter. The local hero Gilles Villeneuve finished with John Watson on the second row in front of Alan Jones and Emerson Fittipaldi. Niki Lauda and Hans- Joachim Stuck formed the fourth row.

Race

On race day, there was cool but dry weather. Jarier started from the pole ahead of Scheckter, Jones and Villeneuve lead. During the first round Scheckter came in a short curve from the ideal line from, which Jones inside having passed to the second rank. Further down the field turned stucco and collided with Fittipaldi. Jacques Laffite, who had to dodge the two suddenly fell back to the end of the field. Fittipaldi could not continue the race due to severe damage to his car. Although stucco contributed more to the box, but there also had to give up.

In the battle for the fifth Mario Andretti and John Watson collided in the sixth round. They were thus back to the positions 17 and 18. The fifth rank then took a Patrick Depailler. When he had to change a tire on the box shortly thereafter, Carlos Reutemann took the fifth place before Derek Daly.

As Jones fell back on lap 18 due to a tire problem, Villeneuve came to him and to Scheckter passed to second place. He had no real chance to catch up with the leading with over 30 seconds ahead Jarier under normal circumstances. But this had to be controlled in the 50th round due to a brake failure the box and abandon the race. This could Villeneuve his first Grand Prix victory just celebrate on home turf. Behind Reutemann, Scheckter, Patrese and Depailler to Daly secured sixth the first World Championship point in his Formula 1 career.
