The Formula 1 1978 season was the 29th FIA Formula 1 World Championship. She was discharged through 16 races in the period from 15 January 1978 to 8 October 1978. Mario Andretti won for the first and only time the drivers' world championship. Lotus was Constructors' world champions.

At the Grand Prix of Sweden constituted the so-called vacuum cleaner Brabham ( Brabham BT46B ) a. In the rear of a Brabham fan was attached, which was officially used for engine cooling. In fact, the fan produced a negative pressure under the car and thus increased the pressure of the Brabham. The race was due to a severe pile-up after the start, in which Ronnie Peterson was involved, canceled. A day later, Peterson died of his injuries due to medical errors.

The race was restarted and reduced from 52 to 40 rounds. The first-placed Mario Andretti and the runner-up Gilles Villeneuve were occupied with one penalty for jumping the start.

News in brief Formula 1

  • Patrick Depailler wins in Monaco with a Tyrrell - Ford his first Grand Prix.
  • The 34- year-old Swede Ronnie Peterson in his 123 Grand Prix victim of an accident that is caused by a bad start maneuvers and the fact that the runway at Monza a few hundred meters after the start of 30 m to 12 m width is narrower. Most vehicles roll even when the starting light turns green, Villeneuve, Andretti and Lauda come off well, behind immediately formed a jam. Patrese, Hunt and Peterson goes off at the funnel-shaped entrance to the first chicane on the course, it comes to the touch and to the chain reaction. Behind also eight other vehicles collide. The explosion of Peterson's Lotus on impact on the barriers created a fireball over the accident site. In less than a minute Peterson is freed from the driver colleagues from the burning wreckage with burns and broken legs. Ronnie Peterson died the next morning in the hospital on a fat embolism, a consequence of bone fractures. In the executed despite the accident race Mario Andretti is world champion.
