Background

Between the Italian Grand Prix and the penultimate World Cup race of the year in Canada was held in Imola not for the World Cup scoring Dino Ferrari Grand Prix. Niki Lauda, who had a frustrating season with a yield of only four championship points behind, could decide the race for themselves. During training, the Canadian Grand Prix he finally announced surprisingly announced his retirement from Formula 1 with immediate effect after he had walked a few laps with the new Brabham BT49. Training

Alan Jones set the fastest practice lap, and thus qualified for the pole position next to the local hero Gilles Villeneuve. The third row of Jacques Laffite and Didier Pironi parted before her two compatriots Jean -Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux. Race

Villeneuve went to Jones and Regazzoni in the lead. The Swiss was overtaken in the eighth round of Piquet.

Villeneuve was not able to break away from Jones. This overtook him on lap 51 in the tight hairpin and defended the top position then to the finish, but also significantly without issuing from his opponent. Until the 57th round Piquet drove in third place. Then he dropped out due to a gearbox failure and had thereby Regazzoni left the podium.
