Background

Williams was presented with three wins in a row at the last Grand Prix in the UK, Germany and Austria as the dominant team in the second half of the season 1979. Due to the rules applicable at that time that the four best results from each of the two season halves counted, played the Williams driver Alan Jones and Clay Regazzoni yet only a minor role in the fight for the world title, as they had scored in the first half only a few points. Ferrari driver Jody Scheckter thus had the best chance of winning the drivers' world championship, which was also favored by the fact that his team-mate Gilles Villeneuve had a clear number -two state in the team.

Jean -Pierre Jarier returned to auskurierter disease back to his place in the team Tyrrell. Further changes in the driver's field compared to previous races did not exist.

The track of Zandvoort had since been modified in its eastern section with a temporary chicane.

Training

Renault driver René Arnoux secured the pole position next to Alan Jones and before teammate Clay Regazzoni, as well as his own team-mate Jean -Pierre Jabouille. This was followed by the two Ferrari drivers Jody Scheckter and Gilles Villeneuve Jacques Laffite in the Ligier before.

Race

While Jones took over the lead at the very start, Arnoux collided with the moving to his right Regazzoni, because he was under pressure from the left by Jabouille and Villeneuve. Regazzoni left front wheel broke off while Arnoux and damaged his suspension. Villeneuve turned in second place in the first corner.

While Scheckter, who was due to technical problems from the end of the field to start, passes caught up by the whole field, took over his teammate Villeneuve in the eleventh round the leadership of Jones. Jabouille followed at this time in third place ahead of Didier Pironi and Keke Rosberg. Between the latter two occurred during the following round to a place exchange.

Until the 26th round Scheckter passed Pironi and both Rosberg and benefited from the same technical failure Jabouilles, which earned him third place.

In the 47th round to Villeneuve turned, so Jones came back to the top. When four laps later Villeneuve's left rear tire blew, the Canadians turned again, and then tried to get to the pits on three wheels driving. Since he had to travel a whole round and its speed hardly reduced, its suspension has been so damaged that he had to abandon the race in the pits.

Jones won his third race in a row before Scheckter and Laffite, which benefited from Pironi's retirement on lap 52. The other points winners were Nelson Piquet, Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass.
