Background
After several failures, as well as a confrontation with Alain Prost Cesare Fiorio was replaced as sports director of Scuderia Ferrari by Piero Lardi Ferrari. John Barnard left after a dispute with team boss Flavio Briatore 's position as technical director at Benetton. His position took a Gordon Kimball.
Alex Caffi had due to injuries he had sustained in a traffic accident, pause and was represented at Footwork by Stefan Johansson, who was looking for a new contract after his retirement from AGS.
Julian Bailey was replaced with Team Lotus by Johnny Herbert, who was late start to the 1991 season in this way.
Training
Due to rainy weather conditions on Friday made all the pilots their respective pole positions on Saturday in dry track conditions.
For the first time in the current season, the pole position is not achieved by reigning world champion Ayrton Senna, but Riccardo Patrese of. He undercut the only brand of 1:20 min. Senna was followed by the third place behind team-mate Patrese Nigel Mansell. Alain Prost qualified for the fourth place ahead of Roberto Moreno and Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi and Nelson Piquet.
Race
At the start, Mansell pulled over on his teammates. 40 laps were the two double guide until Patrese had to visit the pits due to a puncture. This he initially fell back to sixth place, but came within six rounds back up to third place behind Mansell and Piquet forward.
Mansell led the race in such a superior that he recklessly slowed already on the last lap of the race and the spectators waved. This led according to official figures to electronic failure and a hydraulic problem which blocked the transmission. A few meters before the finish huntert stopped Mansell. Unofficially, it was alleged that Mansell had stalled the engine due to the strong sunken speed. Due to its distance traveled, he was considered a sixth and thus received at least one championship point, the little attention, however, given the ten points seemed to be sure of victory. Nelson Piquet won instead of his rival in front of Stefano Modena, Riccardo Patrese, Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot. Thus presented both Jordan pilots the first World Championship points for the new team still safe. Due to technical problems neither a McLaren MP4 / 6 still reached a Ferrari 642 the target.
