Background

After the Grand Prix of Germany Damon Hill led the Drivers' Championship with 79 points, 21 points ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and 42 points ahead of Jean Alesi.

Williams -Renault resulted in the constructors' championship with 125 points, 78 points ahead of Benetton -Renault, and 87 points ahead of Ferrari.

With Hill ( 1993, 1995 ) and Schumacher ( 1994) were two former winners of this Grand Prix.

Williams -Renault collected enough points to secure the constructors' championship for the eighth time.

Training

In the first free practice on Friday Damon Hill achieved the fastest lap ahead of Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve. On Saturday, in the second training run, Michael Schumacher was able to secure the fastest time in front of the Williams driver Jacques Villeneuve and Damon Hill.

Michael Schumacher claimed at the start of the peak position. Already in the first round, there was a collision between Mika Salo, Pedro Lamy and Jos Verstappen, were eliminated as a consequence of all three drivers during the race. After Jacques Villeneuve in the 19 lap took the lead, he had to leave just three laps later to his teammate Damon Hill.

When Hill went to the box in the following round, again took the lead Villeneuve and gave it to round 59 not anymore from. After Hill still sat once more to the top, Villeneuve took over one last time the lead and did not let up until the finish. Damon Hill was second, third was Benetton driver Jean Alesi.
