2000 Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix 2000 took place on 4 June at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo and was the seventh race of the Formula 1 season 2000. Winner was David Coulthard (McLaren -Mercedes) before Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari) and Giancarlo Fisichella ( Benetton Supertec ).

Background

After the European Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher led the drivers' championship with 18 points ahead of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard with 22 points ahead. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 10 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 47 points ahead of Williams - BMW.

With Michael Schumacher ( four times ) and Häkkinen (once) were two former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice session that traditionally took place in Monaco as early as Thursday, Coulthard scored the fastest lap ahead of Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella. In free practice on Saturday, the order at the top remained unchanged: Coulthard led ahead of Michael Schumacher and Fisichella.

Qualifying

In qualifying Michael Schumacher posted the fastest lap and took the pole position. Second was Jarno Trulli before Coulthard.

Warm Up

In the warm-up, there was a double leadership of the Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello posted the fastest lap ahead of Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf Schumacher.

Race

The launch had to be canceled twice. The first demolition engine damage from Alexander Wurz was responsible for the failure. The second crash resulted from a collision of Pedro de la Rosa and Jenson Button. De la Rosa could no longer participate in the third start lack of spare car.

Coulthard finally won his second race of the season in front of Barrichello and Fisichella. Irvine was ahead of Mika Salo and Häkkinen fourth. Häkkinen's attempts to drive past Salo failed. The McLaren driver also had to give up the sixth and seventh gear at the end of the race.

Coulthard took over by winning the second place in the drivers' world championship of his teammate Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher continued to lead the world championship. In the Constructors McLaren -Mercedes could halve the gap to Ferrari.
