2002–03 Top 16 season
The 2002/03 season was the 104th staging of the French rugby union championship. It comprised of 16 teams in the premier league top 16 and the second highest league Pro D2.

Top 16
The regular season of the top 16 ever had a back-and second round, where the teams were divided into two rating groups. In each case, the top four qualified for the playoffs, consisting of two groups of four. The two best of both playoff groups reached the semi-finals. In the final game, which took place on 7 June 2003 at the Stade de France, the semi-final winners play for the championship trophy Bouclier de Brennus. Here Stade Français vs Stade Toulousain won and won for the eleventh time the championship.
At the same time the playoffs was a relegation round instead of the four worst teams in the regular season. After a pre -trip round the two latter rose from Stade Montois rose as a group Last in the Pro D2, while the CA Bordeaux - Begles was relegated for financial reasons. The worse binned AS Béziers remained for this reason in the top league.

Pro D2
The regular season game lasted 30 days (one forward and reverse round). The bestklassierte team, the CA Brive, went straight into the top 16. The teams ranked 2-4 carried out together with the CA Brive a playoff for the second promotion place, consisting of semi-finals and finals. The climb was secured by Montpellier RC, who was also master of the Pro D2. Two teams had in the amateur league Fédérale 1 descend, the U.S. Marmande and the RC Aubenas Vals.
