2006 Men's World Open Squash Championship

For the 28th time the squash Men's World Championship was held in 2006. The event took place for the third time, the Egyptian capital, Cairo. The patrons had the PSA.

Top seeds this year was Amr Shabana, who had to defend his title in front of his home crowd. Shabana led not only to the world rankings (as of August 2006), also the Super Series tour. In 2006, he played only four tournaments, but of which he won three (Canadian Classic in January, the Tournament of Champions in February / March and the PSA Masters in April in Bermuda ). The last two tournaments and the Windy City Open, the semifinals reached Shabana, among 2006 PSA Super Series tour.

The peloton had a total of 32 seats. The top 23 in the world rankings were set automatically. The organizers also had the 24th place a wildcard available that went to the Egyptian Omar Mosaad: In the U19 World Cup in the same year he had taken second place behind compatriot Ramy Ashour, who qualified directly for the main draw. The remaining eight seats were played in a qualification in two rounds. A total of 32 players identified eight qualifiers places.

Venue and Schedule

After the preliminary round were played with a few exceptions, in conventional squash facilities in the heart of Cairo, the venue was moved to the Giza Plateau from the quarter- finals. The Glass Court was there in the open air, directly in sight of the Pyramids of Giza. Around the Court bleachers were built, which provided up to 5000 spectators. The qualification was played over two days ( August 30 and 31 ) completely in Cairo Stadium. The first round and the second round were also carried out within two days ( September 1 and 2, with three games at the Pyramids took place on both days ). From the quarter- finals ( September 3 and 4 ) then all matches have been played on the plateau in the Glass Court. The semi-finals were held on September 5, September 6, the final.
