The first stage of the 2009 Tour de France on July 4 was a 15.5 km long individual time trial. It was the first time trial of the Tour in 2009 and ran around Monaco. After almost half of the route the driver drove over a mountain stage of the fourth category, where even the Spaniard Alberto Contador, against a young German Tony Martin. But in the end was time trial Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, the fastest, the was the first yellow jersey of this year's Tour.
