2009 Tour de France, Stage 1 to Stage 11#Stage 3

The third stage of the Tour de France 2009 on July 6th lead over 196.5 kilometers from Marseille to La Grande Motte. It contained three intermediate sprints and two climbs of the fourth category.

About 30 kilometers before the finish there was a break in the main draw: Of the top 10 overall at the start of the stage only Fabian Cancellara, Tony Martin and record Tour winners were Lance Armstrong in the 27 -strong leading group, while stars like Alberto Contador, Andreas Klöden, Levi Leipheimer, Astana all, defending champion Carlos Sastre of Cervélo TestTeam, Cadel Evans of Silence-Lotto and Giro winner and Vuelta winner Denis Menchov ex- Rabobank did not make it. Even drivers who had prospects to win a stage, could not keep up, such as Menchov's teammate Oscar Freire, Tom Boonen was not brought by Quickstep fast enough in the position to reach the group yet.

Since this group at the end once again fell apart, and the teams, the drivers in the 27- man lead group had consistently refused to participate in the persecution work, the peloton came with a gap of 40 seconds to the finish.

This could use to jump from 8 to 2 and from 10 to 3 in the overall drivers like Martin and Armstrong. Even Linus Gerdemann of Milram team and the Belgian Maxime Monfort were thus able to advance into the top 10 overall.
