Western Mediterranean

  • The Third Samnitenkrieg breaks out and lasts until 290 BC The occasion is the attempt of the Samnites, to win the Lucanians against Rome. In alliance with the Umbrians, Sabines, Etruscans, Celts and the Samnites try to regain their lost in the Second Samnitenkrieg position of power.
  • System of a Latin colony in Carsioli (now Carsoli ) in the field of Aequians.
  • The Romans succeed in the first year of the war to conquer the Samnite capital Bovianum. The Samnites soft then to the north.
  • Victory of the Romans under their consul Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus over the Etruscans at Volaterrae.

Eastern Mediterranean

  • Seleucus marries Stratonike, the daughter of Demetrius I Poliorketes. This gains control of Cilicia. A little later there is a dispute between Demetrios and Seleucus for the possession of Tyre and Sidon.
  • Demetrius sends Pyrrhus I. hostage to the court of Ptolemy I
  • Athens makes peace with Cassander.
