From the II Army inspection, the 2nd Army, their associations located south of Aachen gathered in the room was in Hanover. Commander in Chief of the Army High Command 2 was Colonel-General Karl von Bülow. The army comprised in August 1914 following Corps Associations:

  • VII Corps
  • X. Army Corps
  • VII Reserve Corps
  • X. Reserve Corps
  • Guard Corps
  • Guard Reserve Corps

The second army marched under the Schlieffen Plan as part of the German army's right wing in Belgium, was where the Army High Command 2 transferred to better coordinate and the command of the 1st Army. However, it therefore came only to friction with this command authority. Between 22 and August 24, 1914 both major units had to pass the battles at Mons and Namur. Later, the 2nd Army was involved in the Battle of the Marne. Then the front froze in trench warfare. The headquarters of the Army High Command was dated 10 October 1914 to 20 March 1917 in Saint- Quentin, and then until March 27, 1918 in Le Cateau.

On 1 July 1916, the British troops began their long-prepared offensive against the 2nd Army (→ Battle of the Somme ). After some successes of the British associations, the Supreme Command decided to restructure in this fight section. On July 19, 1916, she told the German troops in the field concerned. All the forces north of the Somme were summarized as a new 1st Army, and remained the previous Army High Command 2 assumed. This was still commanded by General von Below, but now renamed in Army High Command 1. The German troops south of the Somme came as a second army under the command of a new Army High Command under General von Gallwitz and his chief of staff, Colonel Bronsart of Schelldorf.

Beginning of 1917 took the Army on withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line ( → Company Alberich ) part. In March 1918, she was the middle of the three attacking armies during the German " Michael " offensive on the Somme.
