5th Army (German Empire)

When the 5th Army / Army High Command 5 (AOK 5) was designated a United Federation and the associated command authority of the German Army during the First World War ( 1914-1918). It included several Army or Reserve Corps and numerous special troops.

History

As on 2 August 1914 was the mobilization of the German Empire, eight armies were formed from the eight existing army inspections. One of them was the Army High Command in Koblenz 5. The associations of the 5th Army gathered in the room Saarbrücken and Luxembourg. The army comprised in August 1914, the following units:

  • Vth Corps
  • VI. Army Corps
  • XIII. Army Corps
  • XVI. Army Corps
  • V. Reserve Corps
  • VI. Reserve Corps

The 5th Army formed together with the 4th Army, the Central Group of the German West Army, which was provided in accordance with the Schlieffen Plan offensive against France. Both armies fought back end of August 1914 an advance of the French army on the Meuse and the Ardennes (→ Battle of Neufchâteau and the Battle of Longwy ) and the opposing troops pushed then back up behind the Aisne. As in 1914 withdrew the German right wing armies (1st and 2nd Army ) as a result of defeat in the battle of the Marne in early September, had to be withdrawn and the 4th Army. Therefore, the 5th Army remained in the positions they had reached at Verdun. Here is the front froze in trench warfare. Since 21 February 1916, the 5th Army was largely engaged in the Battle of Verdun. In 1918, the troops of the United Association among others, in the battle of St. Mihiel and the Meuse -Argonne offensive were involved.

Of 13 September 1914 was the headquarters of the Army High Command in Stenay 5 and from 4 December 1916 in Montmédy. On November 2, 1918, retreated and finally reached on 30 November Bad Nauheim.
