A Letter to Three Wives

A Letter to Three Wives is an American film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz from the year 1949.

Action

The wealthy wives Deborah, Rita and Lora Mae are best friends. They meet one Saturday in May and accompany a class on a boat trip with picnic. In the evening a dance Dinner at the Country Club is planned. Just before the ship casts, she received a letter from Addie Ross, a friend. The left town - along with a husband of three girlfriends. Superior to the three women, who husband will not have to wait when returning home to his wife.

Deborah has her husband Brad met during World War II in the Army and both have married rashly. Before he was drafted, he was with Addie. Later, Deborah felt as a child from the country for a long time out of place in Brad's friends. On this day in May, Brad was going to have to go to a conference and also not knowing if he can come to the dance in the evening.

Rita was a love story- writer for the radio always earner in the house, while her husband George little deserved as a teacher. He was subordinate their careers. When Rita one evening a major for their career woman invited her to dinner, she forgot about it even Georges birthday. Addie had thought of the birthday and sent George records with a supposedly hidden declaration of love. Lora Mae comes from a poor family and was executed one day by her boss Porter. She made it immediately clear that they only accepted overtures of a man, if he wants to marry her. The women come home. Rita meets George and is overjoyed. It will no longer let their work be bothered by their relationship. Lora Mae meets only her mother at home. She believes Porter had disappeared with Addie, but he appears a short time later. Deborah receives a message that Brad evening will not come home.

The two pairs and Deborah meet up at the dance again. Deborah appeased Porter, who sees himself only as a banker for Lora Mae's extravagances and believes that she had never loved him. As Deborah wants to go and her friends opened that her husband had gone away with Addie, Porter interrupts her: He wanted to go away with Addie, however, returned to Lora Mae. While Deborah now knows that her husband is really "only" at a conference is, Lora Mae Porter uses confession is not sufficient to separate from him. Production

A Letter to Three Wives is based on the novel A Letter to Five Wives by John plumber. The film was originally to A Letter to Four Wives hot, with dei fourth wife Anne Baxter was played. Since their scenes were not strong enough and the film should be reduced, accounted for her part completely. Celeste Holm as Addie Ross enters only as a narrator in appearance; in the film she is never seen.

A Letter to Three Wives was filmed in Cold Spring, New York, and in the 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles. He arrived on 20 January 1949 in the cinemas and ran in Germany at June 16, 1950.

A U.S. remake of the film under the title A letter with consequences (English A Letter to Three Wives ) came in 1985 on TV.

Criticism

The lexicon of the International film called A Letter to Three Wives as "smart ..., worldly-wise ... comedy".

Cinema saw in the movie " an intelligent character study ".

Awards

At the Academy Awards in 1950, the film won the Oscar in the " Best Director " and " Best Adapted Screenplay ". In the category " Best Film", he could not be put against the man who wanted to rule themselves.

The film won a 1950 WGA Award for 'Best Written American Comedy ', while Joseph L. Mankiewicz was awarded for the film in 1949 with a DGA Award.
