AGM-122 Sidearm

The AGM -122 Sidearm is an American anti-radar air -to-ground missile.

In the 1980s, the U.S. Navy decided that they needed a new anti-radar air -to-ground missile. As a starting point we used the already decommissioned AIM - 9C Sidewinder, which already counted as an air - to-air missile on a semi- active radar homing head. Was commissioned the company Motorola, convert the AIM - 9C, which then was called AGM -122 Sidearm (Sidewinder Anti-Radiation Missile ). Main difference was that the original was narrowband exchanged against a broadband radar seeker head. In 1986, the Sidearm was put into service and by 1990 more than 700 units were built which were only used by the Marine Corps.

Mid -1980s, was designed to improve the AGM- 122. Known as the AGM- 122B variant was never realized.

Compared to other anti-radar missiles such as the AGM -88 HARM the Sidearm has only the advantage that it is cheaper, smaller and lighter; in all other aspects - especially in terms of range and accuracy - it is inferior.
