Agostino da Siena

As called Agostino di Giovanni Agostino also Siena, (* um 1285 in Siena, † before June 27, 1347 ) was an Italian architect and sculptor.

Life

First mentioned in writing he is on 11 September 1310 when he, probably a sister of the sculptor Cellino di Nese married Lagina di Nese. With her he became the father of Giovanni d' Agostino ( * ca 1311 ) and his younger brother Domenico di Agostino, who himself later artists were. In the same year he was already out as a master. Many of his late works were with his son Giovanni executed as the Cappella Ghini (Santa Maria della Pieve ) in Arezzo or different works in Serre di Rapolano ( Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo e Andrea ). This also resulted in mehrefachen confusion with the works of his son Giovanni. Great influence on the work of Agostino had the Senese artist Tino di Camaino. Among the most important single works by the artist include the 1321 -created wooden statue Sant'Ansano, which is now in the Louvre, and the tomb of Cino da Pistoia, a marble factory in Pistoia Cathedral, which was built in 1337.

Was one of his closest associates Agnolo di Ventura (also known as Agnolo da Siena ). In the biographies of Le vite dei più eccellenti pittori, Scultori e architetti by Giorgio Vasari, he is mentioned by Agnolo di Ventura under Vita di Agostino et Agnolo, Scultori et architetti Sanesi. Vasari writes them as a teacher Giovanni Pisano and identifies it as the architect of the church and the convent of the Basilica di San Francesco in Siena and the same in Bologna. Among the most important works of the two plates include the grave of the tomb of Guido Tarlati in the Cathedral of Arezzo ( Cattedrale di San Donato ). The 16 grave stones originated in 1330 on behalf of the Brothers of Various, Delfo and Pier Saccone Tarlati.

His most famous work in Siena is the street facade of the Palazzo Sansedoni that runs along the Via Banchi di Sotto. The facade works were commissioned by Gontieri di Goro Sansedoni in order and were under the direction of Agostino di Giovanni, his staff were the Senese architect Agostino di Cecco di Rosso and Casino. The work was carried out in 1340 and 1341.

The exact date of death of the artist is unknown, in the documents he has already performed at June 27, 1347 as deceased.
